امام در تسلیت به «اشعث ابن قیس» در مرک فرزندش چنین فرمود: ای اشعث! اگر بر پسرت اندوهگینى به خاطر پیوند خویشاوندی سزاواری و اگر شکیبایی کنی هر مصیبت را نزد خدا پاداشى است اى اشعث! اگر شکیبا باشی تقدیر الهی بر تو جاری می‌شود و تو پاداش می‌یابی و اگر بی‌تابی نمایی تقدیر الهی بر تو جاری می‌شود و وزر و گناه بر توخواهد بود ای اشعث پسرت تو را شاد می‌ساخت و او براى تو مایه‌ی بلا و آزمایش بود و مرگ او تو را اندوهگین کرد در حالى که براى تو پاداش و رحمت است.
