مردم را بیازمای، تا دشمن گردی سید رضی می‌گوید: بعضى این عبارت را به رسول الله (ع) نسبت داده‌اند ولى از دلایلى که نسبتش را به على (ع) قوت می‌بخشد مطلبى است که ثعلب از ابن الاعرابى روایت کرده که می‌گوید: مامون می‌گفت که اگر على نگفته بود «اخبر تقله» من می‌گفتم «اقله تخبر» با آن‌هادشمنى کن تا امتحانشان کرده باشى.
